Title The Unboxing (Still life with local relic)
The work, having as its focal point the depiction of the relic of St. Lazarus kept in town of Covo, mixes the setting characteristics of a vanitas with a half-length figure in the act of unboxing the remains of the local patron saint.
Completing the composition are three ears of wheat, reminding the town's heraldry, and a fatcap set in the background, symbolizing the author's artistic journey.
Just as the painted subject hands seem to gift the relic of St. Lazarus to the viewers, the artist, acting on a deeper interpretational level, aims to the recreate the same gesture by donating the work to Covo and its citizens.
